I can’t remember the last time I blew through a book in less than a week. Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers was a great novel, and I was hooked from the first chapter. I loved the story because it’s based on the story of Hosea and Gomer from the Bible. If you aren’t familiar, Gomer was a prostitute and Hosea was a prophet who God commanded to take Gomer as his wife. He obeyed, and Gomer was far from a loving wife. She left him constantly to go back to prostitution, even though Hosea offered her such better, more fulfilling life. Despite her unfaithfulness, Hosea pursed her. He bought her back over and over and forgave her constantly. The whole story just sounds crazy — why would Hosea do that? How could he do that?
Redeeming Love brought so much color to the Biblical narrative. It was frustrating to read at times because how could Angel treat Michael the ways she did when Michael clearly loved her so much and took such great care of her?
The truth is, this is SUCH a mirror of our relationship with Jesus. He loves us so much. There’s absolutely NOTHING we can do that will make him stop loving us. Yet, we turn our backs on Him all the time. I often find myself caught up in the things of this world — success, stuff, status — and forgetting that my relationship with Jesus is the only thing that truly matters. It’s the only thing I should be pursing relentlessly.
We all fall short daily. Thankfully, Jesus’ redeeming love covers us, and our future can be secure in Him. I really enjoyed reading this book, and I recommend it to you. But, I recommend reading the OG story first if you haven’t already.
When was a time Jesus showed his redeeming love to you? When do you feel most loved by Him?
